Editor’s Foreword
The 1990 edition
of Historical Studies marks the end of a three-year cycle of change
which began with the 1988 edition.
During that period the journal has been
placed under the direction of an editorial board, a system has been introduced
for the independent evaluation of papers, and essays submitted directly by the
authors have been published together with papers originally read at the annual
meeting of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association. Each of these
developments marked a new departure for our publication, and this year we are
introducing yet another change in the form of a new cover design. The new cover
is the work of Horst Deppe of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The
central motif is the traditional Christian symbol of the anchor/cross,
reproduced here from a version found in Rudolf Koch, The Book of Signs (New
York: Dover Publications, [1955]). The document which is partially reproduced
on the cover is a manuscript letter of Jacques de Meulles, intendant of New
France, written in 1683 concerning the Sulpician mission at La Montagne.
Since this issue of Historical Studies marks
the conclusion of my term as editor, I should like to take the opportunity to
thank the members of the editorial board as well as members of the executive of
the Canadian Catholic Historical Association for their cooperation over the
past three years. The work of adaptation was made many times easier by their
generous support.
